10.2 - Using Medical Therapeutic Yoga for ACL Rehabilitation and Injury Prevention
CEU's Awarded: 1 hour
Abstract
ACL injuries are on the rise in the United States, with up to 175,000 injuries reported annually. Identifying predisposing risk factors can prevent injury, but also give the practitioner tangible evidence on which to design a holistic rehabilitation program. Adding yoga to your toolbox can improve sport performance in athletes, prevent injury and re-injury, as well as increase athlete motivation, improve self-esteem, diminish depressive symptoms and reduce performance related anxiety. This CE will equip the clinician with the tools necessary to identify at risk populations, understand and minimize risk factors in ACL injury, and understand the evaluative paradigm necessary to use yoga in a medical setting. Case study and direct application will give the clinician the tools necessary for immediate application in the clinical setting.
Clinical Objectives
- Identify at risk populations for ACL injury through learning 5 objective measures to screen athletes.
- Describe how predisposing factors increase injury and re-injury risk in order to identify 5 yogic methods for use in rehabilitation or injury prevention.
- Summarize indications and contraindications for use of medical yoga in ACL rehabilitation and/or injury prevention.
- Utilize 5 training methods for use in ACL rehabilitation and/or injury prevention.
