Module 10.3 Holistic Rehabilitation:  Medical Therapeutic Yoga for the Shoulder Complex

CEU’s Awarded: 1

Abstract:

Module 10.3 is part 3 of a 12 part series on using medical therapeutic yoga in orthopaedics and promotion of systemic wellness through healthy gastrointestinal function and how it relates to joint function.

Shoulder pain is one of the most common orthopaedic diagnoses seen in the US today.  In fact, shoulder pain is second only to knee pain as the most common source of referrals and appointments seen in orthopaedic offices.  Therapists and athletic trainers see a high frequency of resistance training and sports related shoulder injuries which could be efficiently managed with high efficacy, using a holistic rehabilitation model.

Adding yoga to your clinical toolbox is globally beneficial because it harnesses the power to lower stress, improve function, and increase quality of life for both the patient and practitioner.  This CE will equip you with the tools necessary to identify at risk populations, minimize risk factors in shoulder complex injury, and understand the evaluative paradigm necessary to use yoga in a medical setting.  This CE also reviews the latest evidence in injury prevalence in sport, injury prevention, and management of the shoulder complex.  Finally, case study and direct application will give the clinician the tools necessary for immediate intervention.

Professional Yoga Therapy has been leading the way in medical yoga since 2001 with its grassroots programs in post-graduate evidence-based medical therapeutic yoga.  PYT standardizes methodology for evaluation and management in prevention and pathophysiology through education in evidence based CAM modalities, specifically medical therapeutic yoga.

Clinical Objectives

  1. Summarize predisposing injury risk factors in order to identify a minimum of 5 professional yoga therapy methods for use in shoulder rehabilitation or injury prevention.
  2. Evaluate safe application and appropriate use of yoga for the shoulder complex through understanding indications and contraindications.
  3. Identify 2 PYT yoga pre-postures that allow for concurrent evaluation and therapeutic intervention in shoulder rehabilitation.
  4. Analyze the conceptual model in a real time case study format in evaluation and management of a common shoulder diagnosis.
